Park & Recreation Month

Garland celebrates National Park & Recreation Month this July. The parks and recreation facilities run by the City of Garland offer ample opportunities for residents to Get Out & Play!

Nearly three in 10 U.S. adults do not spend time outside on a daily basis and of those who do, almost half spend less than 30 minutes in the fresh air, according to a survey released by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). That’s why this July, the City of Garland and NRPA are challenging everyone to get out and visit their community parks and recreation centers during National Park & Recreation Month.

To encourage everyone in Garland to Get Out & Play, the following free events are being offered this July to celebrate Park & Recreation Month:

Back to the Future Movie Event

This July we are celebrating 30 years of National Park and Recreation Month by going back to 1985 when it all started. We are excited to kick off the month’s activities with a 80’s movie classic! Marty McFly is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-school age parents unite in order to save his own existence! Admission is free and open to the public. In-N-Out Burger's Cookout Trailer will provide free lunch staring at noon. Movie starts at 2 p.m.

80s Aerobicize Awesomeness

9 a.m., Saturday, July 11 at Audubon Recreation Center (342 W. Oates Rd.)

We continue our month of 80s activities by getting physical. Nothing’s gonna stop us now because we got the beat to an awesome aerobics class. We will sweat to the hits of the 80s with Garland’s totally rad aerobics instructor Julie McGinnis-Grindele. Dress up in your favorite 80s workout apparel: neon, spandex, and high tops are all welcome. Free give a ways to compliment your 80s attire!
