Don't Be Fooled by Utility Scams

Beware of Scams 3

Scammers may pose as City employees threatening to disconnect electric and/or water service unless immediate payment is made.

Be suspicious of anyone calling to demand payment over the phone, and be aware of the following:

  • The City does not have an 800, 888 or other toll-free phone number.
  • Scammers can easily exploit caller ID technology to display false identities including the City or law enforcement.
  • Scammers often “spoof” an actual City of Garland phone number on Caller ID, making it appear that the call is coming from the City.
  • Scammers can copy the City’s recorded answering system/IVR or record their own that is similar to the City’s, including the call options menu.
  • The City of Garland does not disconnect services outside of normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • City of Garland utility employees will never ask to enter your home. City employees will always be in a City uniform, have a City identification badge, and be in a City or GP&L vehicle.

Know how to identify red flags and always trust your instincts.
