The Council for Community and Economic Research has published the Cost of Living Index for urban areas for more than 30 years and survey results have consistently rated the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex as one of the most affordable places to live in the United States. A household that moves from other major cities, like Boston or San Diego, will see expenses drop, as illustrated below.
For both homeowners and apartment renters in North Texas, Garland is a highly advantageous place to live. Overall, the cost of housing in Texas is 79% of the average cost of housing in the United States, meaning Texas is very affordable compared to other states and the nation as a whole. Garland itself is one of the most affordable places to buy a home, as well as renting a living space. The city has a rent per unit rate ranking lower than both Dallas County and the entire Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
